Boys (2014)

Summary: BOYS tells the story of Sieger, a sporty, rather quiet 15-year-old boy who discovers love during the summer holidays. Sieger is training in the new athletics team for the national relay championships and meets the intriguing and unpredictable Marc. The friendship that develops seems nothing out of the ordinary, but Sieger secretly harbours stronger feelings for Marc. He engages in a lonely struggle with himself when it emerges that Marc is also in love with him.

Review: The cinematic aspect in this movie is beautiful, the locations and the scenery all add to the building of the romance between Seiger and Marc. The relationships starts out as just team members in their running team but soon builds and escalates to a secret affair between the two. Unlike most movies, the relationship between Seiger and Marc doesn't require that many words, with them its more of the looks or the sexual tension/spark that is very visible between the two. I think that's why this is such a feel good movie that I love to come back to. Most relationships always have the need to be defined and talk about feelings but Seiger and Marc's relationship based off instinct and in the moment without having to use words to describe it. The acting is amazing because they can portray exactly what they are thinking and feeling without having to do a grand romantic gesture or a long heart felt speech that has honestly been overdone but a look or smile. I think that's what makes this film so unique. The film is in German/Dutch. Overall, 10/10! beautifully made, actors are phenomenal, location is amazing, plot is complex and addictive!

Out in the Dark (2012)

Summary: A drama centered on the love affair between two men on opposite sites of the Mid-East conflict: Palestinian student Nimer and Roy, an Israeli lawyer.

Review: I was reluctant to watch this movie because I had heard of some violence in it and overall hate but this is one of best gay movies there is out right now. Just the controversy of a Palestinian and a Israeli falling in love is enough political hatred but then add in the fact that they are men just puts a new twist on it. Out in the Dark kind of brings back the principles of what a real relationship should be like. Nimer and Roy have so much chemistry and love that it bursts out of the screen. The boys have so many obstacles like countries, religions, politics, families, death and they are still willing to put everything on the line for each other. Again, this movie is very political in that it shows the real issues between Israel and Palestine and how they affect the relationship between Roy and Nimer. You don't see that kind of love in movies anymore, nevertheless, in gay cinema. This movie is in Hebrew and Arabic but it is completely worth the reading. Overall, 9/10 because the ending was very open to interpretation and you don't really know what happens, it forces you to use your imagination and me personally I don't like that.

Just a Question of Love (2009)

Summary: After his gay cousin dies from hepatitis, young Laurent, who lives with his best friend Carole, falls in love with Cedric, a plant scientist. He's afraid to inform his conservative parents that he is gay.

Review: An absolute masterpiece! I love this film for its realness and relate-ability. This movie is about finding someone to comfort you in your time of need and finding the person that can will give you that nudge you need. Laurent comes from a very strict family that will put him out on the street if they ever found out that he was gay, then you have Cedric who is completely out to his mother and comfortable with his life and who he is. Laurent and Cedric have the kind of relationship and chemistry that you dream about. They can argue and have a conversation but still are very cute and sexy when they want to be. The scenery is most of the time a beautiful garden and French countryside. The movie is in French but totally worth it! Overall, 10/10 beautiful story plot, amazing chemistry, and happy ending!

Warnings:
  1. Sex Scene
  2. Emotional
  3. Happy Ending

Shelter (2007)

Summary: When his college dreams are sidelined by family obligations, a young man finds comfort in surfing with his best friend's brother.

Review: Shelter was the first gay film I ever saw and I fell in love with it instantly. The thing about this film is that it isn't only about a gay guy finding himself and figuring out he is gay but instead about a young man with so many different issues in his life like being the man of the house and having to take care of himself, his sister, an his nephew, all while holding down a job and making a little bit of time for surfing. Shot in California, I completely love the "surfer guy" aspect of the movie. The characters are complex and so easy to fall in love with. Zach and Shawn have so much chemistry and you can see the genuine spark between them. It's a feel good movie that I'm always returning to when I have a shitty day. Overall, 10/10 all around!

Warnings:

  1. Very emotional
  2. Cute sex scene
  3. Adorable gay montage (something all movies should have)
  4. Amazing soundtrack!

Getting Go: The Go Doc Project (2013)

Summary: College boy, Doc is obsessed with a well-known NYC go-go dancer, nicknamed Go. He befriends his hunky crush with the intention of shooting a movie about what it's like to live in his skin. Camera in hand, he follows his subject across the city: into bars, onto rooftops and dance floors and ultimately his bedroom. But as they grow closer, flirtation blurs the line between subject and filmmaker until a steamy night together solidifies deeper feelings.

Review: I was really reluctant to watch this movie when I first saw it on Netflix because of the "go-go dancer" aspect, thinking it was going to be like every other movie but it was completely different from that. It can be called a modern day love story between two very different people. You have Doc a almost college grad shut-in that spends more time online than anywhere else, then you have "Go" a very social go-go dancer without any boundaries. You see the relationship evolve co-workers to a full blown relationship. I find myself going back to this movie time and time again. Overall, 9/10 because i didn't exactly like the ending but it had to again.

Warnings:

  1. Very steamy sex scene
  2. Tragic ending (but still worth watching)
  3. Sappy Romance

Ronny & I (2013)

Summary: A young man comes to terms with his sexuality and his hidden love for his best friend.

Review: In my opinion I wasn't a huge fan of short films but this film completely changed my perception of them. "Ronny & I" is your typical coming out story but with a completely unique twist. I'm always one that can tell whats going to happen at the end of movies but I could not do that with this film. The story plot starts with the narrator explaining that he has broke up with his girlfriend because he has feelings for someone else. On Valentines Day weekend him and his best friend Ronny take a trip together where the narrator comes out to him and states his "liking" for his Ronny but what's exceptional (without spoiling it) is the way that Ronny takes the news. Overall, 10/10 and I would highly recommend if you are the sappy romantic type!

Warnings:

  1. Sappy Romance, so you may cry.

Weekend (2011)

Summary: After a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special.

Review: The character dynamics between Russell (Tom Cullen) and Glen (Chris New) is exceptional! The movie is very relatable because the characters or just Glen isn't the type that you immediately like, you have to warm up to him. Russell on the other hand is very sweet, laid back but not completely open about his sexuality in comparison to Glen. Glen and Russell kind of bring out the best in each other. Russell brings out the insecurities that he tries so much to hide under his very out going personality and Glen brings Russell out of his shell and makes him accept and like being in his own. Amazing chemistry, dialogue, and story plot.

Warnings:
  1. Sex Scene
  2. No Happy Endings (but still worth watching)
